#3 , Changing how we see internet art with Dan Hanson, d0n.xyz

NEW MEDIA ARTIST, what a time to be alive

Today, we had a guest speaker in the class named Dan Hanson,  d0n.xyz who is a new media artist. He is changing the way we perceive art by using the internet as a tool for artists.

We have internet artists present. Dan spoke to us about the advantages and disadvantages of using the Internet as a medium for art. Since the internet explosion, artists have found various ways to utilize it. Some artists create glitchy images and break codes, like the one above from Giphy, which is capable of movement. Unlike traditional art, internet art is constant and can be considered as an optical illusion that mimics movement.

for example, the piece above by Damien Gillary who uses lines and space to give an optical illusion.

Art can now be created without the physical limitations of the real world, thanks to new-age technology.

I feel like one trend I have been seeing is that inclusively, the art world is changing to make it accessible for everyone.

One of the first things that stuck with me while listening to Dan speak was the questions he asked himself during his creative process.

"How do we uplift Internet Art to become fine art"
He is focusing on how I can make this accessible for everyone even people who don't have the resources to showcase in a physical gallery space.

When you think of fine artworks you see them in the white gallery space, where it is neatly presented but with digital artists, it can be hard to get into those spaces since many don't see digital art as high enough. Most think digital artists work for companies or are for logo usage, but most want their art to be viewed as highly.

Here is where Dan comes to save us even for artists who can't get a space for their works to be displayed.

                                                       NEW ART CITY

A virtual art space that lives on the internet, its mission is to
"Develop an accessible toolkit for building web-based virtual installations that show born-digital artifacts alongside digitized works of traditional media."

New Art City is a virtual gallery space designed to help digital artists showcase their works without any limitations of the physical world. This awesome space in the digital world was created during the COVID-19 lockdown to allow artists to be creative and showcase their works to others. It helps connect artists through art and was created by Dan to preserve the culture and strengthen the art community. Dan understands the difficulties that many artists face, especially in the digital space, and he wants to create a space for them. New Art City also promotes creativity, nuance, and experimentation.

EAT ME by Alice Yuan Zhang
I enjoy the creative layout of the viewer traveling down the throat and into the belly. It is a show about our digital digest and being aware of what we consume in our virtual lives through our phones or laptops.

I really enjoyed the talk since I didn't know a website like New Art City existed it felt like a new game came out. I enjoy that I will have control of any show I would want to do. It is like virtual reality but for art lovers.
